Diwali and Bonfire Night

As part of 'Understand the World', we enjoy learning about different people and celebrations around the world. We learned all about different festivals of light.

Diwali was the first festival we learned about and it is celebrated by Sikhs and Hindu's all over the world. It is a very big festival that lasts 5 days, so we watched a video of a little girl and her family about how they get ready for Diwali and how they celebrate it. If you would like to watch the videos below at home, click on the links below.

During Diwali, little diva lamps are made and put round the home and outside the front door. This is to believed to help the Goddess help Lakshmi find her way into people's homes. We made our own Diva lamps by beautifully decorating paper plates and adding a flame to the top. Have a look at some of our pictures below.

Bonfire Night

We also learned about Bonfire Night and why it is celebrated. We made beautiful firework paintings by using straws and different colours of paint. As part of our outdoor learning, we also use powder paint and water to create large fireworks on the ground. It was so messy and fun! Whilst painting, we talked about the different colours and shapes we see whilst watching fireworks and explored what happened when we mixed colours together.

At the end of the day, we learned all about how to stay safe on Bonfire Night.
