Sporting Newsletter - SPRING TERM

Sporting Newsletter –Spring Term

Welcome,

The sporting success of 2017 has certainly continued into 2018 with a number of competition victories along with a very unique day where 50 pupils from school represented Arnold Mill at a district competition.

Year 5&6 Handball TEAMS – 5 in total

Without doubt the highlight of the spring term came in March when 50 pupils from years 5&6 competed at the district handball finals which were held at Arnold Mill. For some of the pupils it was their very first time of representing school and it was clear they were very excited before the event and also extremely proud of themselves after the event. It was a very proud day for myself as every one of the players performed to the best of their ability, tried their very best and came away having loved the competition. Every one of the 5 teams won at least one of their games and to top of the afternoon Arnold Mill finished 1st and 2nd.

Year 5&6 Pop Lacrosse Team – District CHAMPIONS and Runners Ups

The year began extremely well with 2 teams (16 pupils) competing at the Pop Lacrosse District finals held at Arnold Hill.  With 9 teams competing at the event it was a very competitive competition but the strength of sporting ability in school shone through as both teams remained unbeaten in their leagues to qualify for a final. Unfortunately time on the day didn’t allow a final but Arnold Mill walked away with Gold and Silver – an incredible achievement.

Year 5&6 Dodgeball -District CHAMPIONS and Runners Ups

Once again the talented pupils of Arnold Mill showed their superb talent by finishing 1st and 2nd at the dodgeball district finals for the second year running.

Year 5&6 Netball – District CHAMPIONS

The girls’ netball team travelled to Christ The King with high expectations after aa few weeks of training Mrs Jacks. The team did not disappoint, playing 5 games and winning them all without conceding a point. The team were crowned Champions of Gedling, which is the very first time we have won this event as a school.

Year 5&6 High 5 –District CHAMPIONS

It was another successful afternoon at the High 5 competition as Arnold Mill came away as winners once again. The 2 teams representing school finished 1st and 4th out of 12 teams which once highlights the talent in school.

A big thank you to Mrs Jacks for giving up her free time to train the players in preparation for the Netball and High 5 competitions. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their training and the hard work paid off with their winning performances.

Year 5&6 Sportshall Athletics – COUNTY FINALISTS

After winning the district finals in November the year 5&6 sportshall athletics team represented Gedling at the School Winter Games finals which were held at The David Ross Sports Village. With the standard at the event extremely high and after a slow start with the relay events it was brilliant to see the resilience of the team as they outshone other schools in the field events and improved their relay performances at the end of the event. The team finished 3rd and each of the 22 pupils received a bronze medal.

Year 3&4 Dodgeball

The sporting talent in lower Key Stage 2 showed their excellent ability at a dodgeball tournament held at Richard Bonington during the spring term. With 4 schools competing at the competition it was the pupils of Arnold Mill which came away as winners after winning all of their games. Well done to all 12 pupils which competed.

Year 5&6 School Football Team

The school football team have now played nearly of all their league games, with the last 2 games taking place on Wednesday 28th March. The team have been magnificent this season, playing 6 leagues games and winning 5 of them. We are hoping the team will qualify for the play offs.

Year 5&6 Girls Football Team

The girls’ football team have continued with their early season success, playing 5 league games and winning 4 of them. The girls will play their last league on Thursday 26th April against Robert Mellors, a victory in this game will hopefully see them qualify for the district play offs.

Year 5&6 Football B Team

Good luck to the team as they compete in B team tournament at Redhill this week.

May I take this opportunity to thank those of you that have supported our school teams over the term; it makes such a difference to the players to have such wonderful support.

County final success

The recent 3rd place finish by the athletics meant that over the past 10 months Arnold Mill has competed at 11 county finals and has finished 3rd or above at 10. We think this is an incredible achievement which probably isn’t able to be matched across Nottinghamshire.

This success has meant that around 50 pupils at Arnold Mill have received medals and experienced success at an extremely high level.

The successes:

Year 5&6 Handball County Champions                        Year 5&6 Pop Lacrosse County Champions

Year 5&6 Girls Football County Champions                Year 3&4 Handball County Champions

Year 4&5 Quadkids Athletics - County runners up   Year 5&6 Tag Rugby – County runners up

Year 5&6 Sportshall Athletics - 3rd                          Year 5&6 Girls Cricket - 3rd

Year 4 Cricket - 3rd                                                    Key stage 2 Boccia - 3rd

This success along with the number of children which have represented the school at district level shows the invaluable experiences our pupils receive to play sport. Well done to all the pupils which have played in a school team over the years.

The sponsored event which took place on Friday 9th March has seen the school raise a total of £2410 which is an incredible amount. Thank you to all the pupils which brought in their sponsorship form. Pupils will receive their prizes this week (unfortunately if your money was returned after the closing date the prizes will be given out after Easter). The school will receive around £1000 of this money to purchase new PE equipment.

Farewell Arnold Mill

My association with Arnold Mill began way back in 2009 when I worked in school part time as an outside provider but it was in 2011 that I was given the opportunity to join the team as a full time member of staff and with the challenge of raising the profile of PE and Sport in school and ultimately to make the pupils at Arnold Mill winners. In the next 6 and half years from here it has been a wonderful journey which I have loved and will mean Arnold Mill will always be a part of me. To be the first school in Nottinghamshire to achieve the AfPE award, the first school in Gedling to achieve 3 gold awards consecutively through the school games, to have witnessed hundreds of pupils represent their school along with even more pupils participating and enjoying numerous after schools has been an immensely proud time in my career and I wish all the pupils the very best for the future both in sport and in life.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents for your support over the years and for you recent kind words. I will miss you all.

Have a fantastic Easter

Mr Darby
